Daily Thoughts – Who Are You Listening To?

August 8, 2018

Good Morning!

I am listening carefully to all the Lord is saying. Psalm 85:8 (TLB)

Expect great things to happen – does GOD give us anything but?

My lesson this morning is obviously about listening to God and God alone.  He must feel that I need to re-focus … on Him.  You see, I thought that I was but that’s just the way God works:  “Yeah, it’s good.  Now do it better.”

According to my inbox this morning, I need to take a little time and address this issue.

This is one of the emails.  I’ve used it before, but it’s been a while…

Who Are You Listening To?

A man was being chased by a tiger. He ran as hard as he could until he was at the edge of a cliff with the tiger in hot pursuit. The man looked over the edge of the cliff and saw a branch growing out of the side of the cliff a few feet down. He jumped down and grabbed the branch just as the tiger reached the cliff. The tiger growled viciously as the man sighed a great sigh of relief.

Just then a mouse came out from a crevice and began to chew on the branch. The man looked down to what was a drop of a thousand feet and sure death and looked to the heavens and yelled out, “Dear God, if you are there, please help. I will do anything you ask but please help.”

Suddenly a voice came booming down from heaven, “You will do anything I ask?” it questioned.

The man shocked to hear a reply to his plea yelled back, “I will gladly do anything you ask, but please save me.”

The voice from heaven then replied, “There is one way to save you but it will take courage and faith.”

The branch began to weaken from the mouse and the tiger was still growling a few feet above the man, “Please, Lord, tell me what I must do and I will do it. Your will is my will.”

The voice from heaven then said, “All right then, let go of the branch.”

The man looked down to a fall of a thousand feet and certain death. He looked up at the hungry tiger a few feet away and he looked at the mouse still chewing on the branch. Then he looked up at the heavens and yelled, “Is there anyone else up there?”

Isn’t that just the way we humans behave?  We want God to help us, to protect us, but “please, God, do it the way I want you to do it.”  Certainly, we are to do what we are able to do BUT, do we then turn it over to Him?  Did we talk to Him?  And more than that, did we LISTEN to Him?

I was talking to a woman this morning about some things that are happening in her life and she told me that she had read her Bible this morning. When she finished I asked her what the scriptures she read had said or meant to her.  She looked at me and said, “What?”

“Well, the scriptures you read, was there something in the scripture that stuck with you?” I asked.

“What do you mean?” she replied.

“Was there something in the part of the Bible you read this morning that you remember?  I teach the kids that you should read a scripture or a story a couple or more times.  I write down or circle words that stick with me or touch me as I read it and then I go back and re-read those words again and I ask God to speak to me and tell me what it is I’m supposed to understand about those words today.”

“Oh, there’s more than just reading it?” she asked.  “I was doing what I thought I was supposed to do.  There’s more?”

What a great conversation we had!

So, are you letting go of the branch?

Or, like that man, are you asking for someone/something else?

That’s my question to ponder today.

Make it a GREAT day!
